The ACA – Obamacare Decision

We stand at the fork of a mountain pass. To our right the path continues uphill, to our left, it winds gently back down.

The former path is difficult. We’ve been on it a long time and some of us are tired. Altho the vast majority of us have made it this far, some have fallen to the end of the line and others have raced out in front, But as a group, we are all proceeding up the mountain. The view gets better with each step, some may have a better view than others, but the horizon is vast and the vistas for almost all are far better than they were.

The latter path is a tempting one, with groups of people along the way welcoming us and congratulating us on our decision to take the easier road. Equity and equality await. All our earthly needs will be met. As we get closer to the valley floor, we slow further and further until we are all at the same level. Of course, the view isn’t very good, but we are so focused on who is in front and how unfair that is, well, we don’t really notice the view. We have gained security… but lost our souls.

The Supreme Court has placed the decision about the ACA – Obamacare back in the people’s hands. What this country becomes in the future is rightly determined by it’s citizens. We must do it carefully, and with both our ancestors and progeny in mind. Are we are willing to trade our dreams for perceived security? Will we abandon exceptional for equality? Will we sacrifice the remarkable in the name of fairness? The decision has been, rightly, passed back to us. Do we have the courage to take the more challenging path?
